Variable Speed Drives are used to control the speed of electric motors that drive processes. Most moving processes have inertia that becomes a factor when slowing or stopping the process. A motor connected to a process load will be either "motoring" or "overhauling". A motoring motor is converting electrical energy into mechanical energy. An overhauling motor is being driven by the load and is converting mechanical energy in to electricity, acting as a generator. An overhauling load is creating power that, if left alone, could potentially cause an overvoltage fault in the drive. If this happens the drive/motor can lose control of the process. The overvoltage fault can be avoided by utilizing Bonitron Overvoltage Solutions.

Motor Overhauling vs Motoring

Example:

Raise Load >>
Power from drive to motor

Lower Load <<
Power from motor to drive

Line Regeneration Transistors Resistors Combination Braking Servo Motor Brakes
Bonitron Line Regeneration

Line Regen Solutions return excess drive DC energy to the AC line where it can be used by other equipment in order to reduce utility demand and cost. Line Regens can be installed in drive cabinet.

  • Use as stand-alone solution or with Braking Transistor and Resistor
  • Integrate into drive cabinet
  • 208 - 600VAC
  • Up to 450A
Bonitron Braking Transistors

Braking Transistors act as a switch that turn on before DC voltage reaches the connected drive's DC trip point. This allows excess power to be dissipated into a connected resistor/load bank.

  • Use in place of internal drive brake.
    Use with Braking Resistor.
  • EtherNet/IP & Profibus/DP options
  • 115 - 690VAC
  • Up to 17,600A
Braking Resistors

Braking Resistors dissipate excess energy as heat and can be used with Bonitron Braking Transistors or drive brakes when correctly sized. For high-duty applications, consider a Line Regen.

  • Use with drive brake or Bonitron Braking Transistor
  • NEMA-3R and stainless steel options
  • 208 - 690VAC
  • Various sizes and duties
Combination Braking

Combination Braking Packages include a Transistor and Resistor in one, easy-to-install enclosure. For applications under 22A, consider the M3545 Line Regen as an alternative.

  • Use in place of internal drive
    brake and resistor
  • Simple installation
  • 208 - 480VAC
  • Up to 40A
Servo Motor Brakes

Servo Motor Brakes act as a secondary brake to stop the servo motor in case of drive or power failure. They also isolate the motor from its power source once it is stopped for increased safety.

  • Meets EN-954 safety requirement for E-stop braking for servo motors
  • Simple Installation
  • 460 - 480 VAC
  • Up to 150 A
